his play is always performed at the beginning of each day's presentation of Kyogen.
Among the plays presently performed this and the following ''Imojiru;I are the only two without
words, being performed solely to the rhythm of the flutes and drums. It is this play that appears
being performed in Kano Eitoku's famous screen mentioned above.
A demon appears and after bowing to the audience he pays his respects to King Emma and his
clerk. The demon comes back to the stage with the soul of a deceased person, whom he brings
before Emma; although he intends to torment the deceased, he flnds himself constantly defeated
by the scroll that the man carries. (The scroll in fact being a list of all the good acts that the man
has performed during his lifetime.) The demon does his best to grab the scroll, and hands it to the
clerk seated at Emma's side. After reading the contents and showing it to Emma, the clerk hands
back the scroll and releases the deceased. The clerk then sets about beating the demon, inviting
the dead man to do the same. Once Emma and his clerk have withdrawn, the demon attempts to
get his ovm back, but finding himself powerless against the scroll he gives in and carries the _dead
man on his back to Paradise.
