A monk from the east of Japan sets off on a pilgrimage to various sites around Osaka. The
impoverished monk learns from the owner of a teahouse how he can cross the Kanzaki river for
free. It seems the boatman is fond of puns, and the pun taught the monk by the teahouse owner
contains the name, Tadanori, of a famous warrior of old. Tada nori also means ''travel free,l' and
the pun will ensure his popularity with the boatman. The monk sets about memorizing the puns
but he somehow gets it mixed up, with disastrous consequences.
