This play has been said to be one of the auspicious kyogens. Suehiro is an opened Japanese
handy-fan. Its widely opened style gives it the meaning of "good luck forever:I This story was
written at a time when Suehiro was widely used for presents.
In this story, a lord asks his servant, Taro-Raja to get a Suehiro for a New Year's greeting
present. But Taro-Raja doesn't know what a Suehiro is. He gets the completely wrong thing - an
umbrella from a bad man, and returns to their castle. His lord gets angry - but Taro-Raja doesn't
know why. Taro-Raja tries to do something to smooth his lord's feeling.
