The first challenging role for many young kyogen performers is that of the monkey in this play.
A lords with his servant Taro-Raja, is returning from a fruitless days' hunting when he is
attacked by a monkey being led by its trainer. The monkey scratches the lord and, outraged, the
lord demands that the trainer kill it and give the lord the monkey's skin, which he intends to use to
make a new arrow-quiver for himself.
However, the trainer is understandably reluctant to kill the monkey that he has reared with his
ownhands.
